On Saturday, December 18, 2016 at (11:00) a.m. the ceremony of the Kurdistan Flag Day was started by the presence Assist. Prof. Dr. Lazgin Abdi Jamil, President of the University of Zakho and vice president of the scientific affairs and students affairs, the mayor of the Zakho, the staff from militarily academy, alongside a number of regional governmental authorities, party authorities, and parliamentarians, academic staff of the University and the large crowds of the students from the University of Zakho.
At the beginning, a minute"s silence in memory of the fallen martyrs was held and afterwards the Kurdistan flag was hoisted and the Kurdish national anthem played, as a symbol of the Kurdish desire for freedom. Then the president of the University of Zakho delivered a speech about the history of Kurdistan and the fallen heroes of Peshmerga, security and volunteer forces, who lost their lives defending the Kurdistan Region and protecting all religions and ethnic groups for the sake of maintaining the culture of peaceful coexistence and wish Almighty Allah to blessing their soul in the heaven and give patience to their families.
Students celebrated this festive day by wearing clothes Kurdish Peshmerga forces, Kurdish flag pins and traditional clothes decorated in the vibrant colours of red, yellow, and green found on the flag of Kurdistan. The ceremony included many events like: Basketball tournament that played between the team of Zakho and the team of the University of Zakho.
